Protecting Your Home & Business Day & Night

They say an ‘English Man’s Home is his Castle’ and in some neighbourhoods residents wish they did actually have a Castle.

Although security is a very important important element to ensure your Family and Property  remains safe there are ways of approaching it so that it does not impact on daily life or make your property look like a fortress.

Starting from the outside in; it is best to keep a potential intruder from stepping onto your property in the first place. Often they call to a house in the daytime just to check if you are in or at work and look for ‘what’s on offer’. If you are at home and you ask them why they are around the side or back of your house they always have a great excuse. “I’m looking for Mr Jones, sorry have I got the wrong house”, “I just wondered if you needed any jobs doing”, “I was given this address as there was a car for sale”. Well you get the idea.

So Step 1 - Stop them coming onto your property in the first place. Automated gates used to be just for Movie Stars, Footballers and the Lord of the Manor, today they are far more common and are fitted to 2 & 3 Bedroom Semis as well as the Executive Homes as they offer a great level of security, look attractive and actually add value to your home.

Step 2 - Visual Deterrents - An Intruder Alarm is almost a must these days and acts as a great deterrent to anyone thinking about breaking in. The simple Burglar Alarm from years ago has now been transformed into something so much more. It can detect Water, Fire, Carbon Monoxide Gas and yes they still detect intruders. These can be just Audible Alarm systems or they can be Monitored by a Central station with a Police Response or even configured to call your Mobile Phone.

CCTV is again not just for the large companies anymore. With the fall of electronic prices in the last decade sophisticated CCTV systems are now available to most households. You can even access them from you office PC or even you Mobile Phone or iPad.

Step 3 - Security Lighting - If you’re trying to break in during the hours of darkness the last thing you want is lights coming on all over the place.

Step 4 - Physical Security - I wasn’t thinking of a doorman but more of window bars and gates to external buildings (sheds, garages etc) and sliding grilles to windows. It might sound a bit extreme but these grilles open lake a pair of curtains in the day and close together when you sleep or leave the property. They provide a great amount of protection and actually look quite attractive as they create a diamond shape. Alternatively are window and door shutters, these aren’t the big industrial looking units but the continental shutters that have been used around Europe for the last 20 years or so.
